EBB PRO AUSTRALIAN TOUR EVENT
3 A rated
Incorporating the STATE BODYBOARDING SERIES ROUND 3.
28TH – 30TH JULY – TRIGG BEACH
Hardy, hard man to beat in blue ribbon division of Championship tour / while Hands wins two divisions hands down.

Margaret Rivers Ryan Hardy showed why he is regarded as the best body boarder in the world on the weekend. The current world champion and tour leader on the Australian Pro Tour brought spectators and competitors to their knees with a repertoire of powerfully committed manoeuvres with lightning fast speed.

Hailing from South West Australia, Hardy is part of a family that has salt water running in their veins. His father Tony is regarded as one of the pioneers of surfing in the region, while his brothers Brett and Gene are renowned big wave exponents along with some very successful results in competition surfing.
Hardys surfing was amazing throughout the event and in the final of Open Pro division pushed the barriers yet again to dominate the final ahead of Thomas O’Brien (Bunbury), Michael Honeybone (Inglefarm, SA) and Ben Veitch (Margaret River).

Honeybone was impressive throughout the event, but unfortunately wave selection let him down in the final which saw him finish in third place. O’Brien from Bunbury was the only one who really came within a cooee of Hardy. With a 12 wave limit on waves to be caught in the final and competitors being judge on the highest scoring two waves, some interesting statistics emerged at the end of the final.

Hardys lowest scoring ride in the final was 7.5 points with his highest scoring ride a 9.0. His throw away wave of 7.0 points could not be matched by O’Brien who finished with a 5.0 and a 6.8 point ride to finish second while Vietch finished fourth. O’Brien did his best to give Hardy a run for the money on offer, but it was Hardys combination of powerful manouvres, lip launching ARS’s, barrel rolls and inverts that gave him the nod from judges.
“I would like to thank Whitney from EBB and the other sponsors for continuing to support the body boarding fraternity of WA with events like this, that not only allow others to mix it with seasoned competitors, but also gives the up and coming crew a chance to realise their dreams. I have seen a few of the younger competitors performances over the weekend in the state round and I can see it won’t be long before there are others that will be stepping up to the professional events”, said Hardy.

In the EBB pro womens final Lauren Knowles from Bar Beach in NSW, showed the west coast girls how it’s done. Knowles kept a close eye on Mullaloos Lauren Williams who in one heat during the day posted the highest score in the womens division, a 9.5 point ride, but unfortunately for Williams she was unable to replicate her earlier performance and at times looked a little tired from the amount of heats and divisions she had entered. Knowles set the pace early in the final and maintained it to relegate Williams into second Jessica Bye (Thornlie) into third, Kirby Smith (Lansdale) fourth and Sarah Robinson (Shoalwater) fifth.

Joe Jordanoff from Dunsborough was tipped as the man to claim victory in the EBB drop knee final, but had to work hard for it with Justin Welsh from Ocean Grove in Victoria also wanting the title. Welsh, Trent Sanford (Kingsley) and Kim Feast from Trigg all put on stellar performances, but it was who shone in the end winning the final with a series of well executed cutback and floater re-entrys.
Jordanoff who was crowned Australian Drop knee champion several years ago proved that he still has what it takes to the younger competitors.
In the final round of the Sunsmart state body board series the competition was just as furious as competitors tried to mimic the moves of the professionals in the EBB Pro.

The last of three events on the calendar saw Ben Veitch (Margaret River), make an impressive appearance in the open mens final. Veitch utilised his powerful style to set the pace early in the final posting an 8.5 point ride on his first wave. As the other finalists picked up the ante to try and match the level Veitch had set it was clear that his early ride had rattled the other competitors. Veitch continued to retain the lead till the final siren taking victory from Daniel De Giosa (Woodvale), Lee Szczepanksi (Margaret River) and Daniel Stone (Greenmount).
“It’s always great to get a really good first wave. It kind of sets you up mentally for the rest of your heat and is a good confidence boost. It seems like that was really the only cracker that came through in the heat. I’m pretty stoked with the win and want to thank my sponsors and all the sponsors who put this event together,” said Veitch.
In the Drop Knee division Jason Van Bavel (Scarborough) caused an upset by narrowly taking out Joe Jordanoff (Dunsborough). The two went head to head in the final and while Chad Abbott (Singleton)opened up with a good scoring ride it was not enough for him and Kim Feast (Trigg) to catch the two who were leading. Drop knee body boarding is where the individual rides the wave kneeling on one knee performing manouvres. In the end Van Bavel ousted Jordanoff for the win and a well deserved one at that.

Kym Phillips (Wembley Downs) made an impressive come back to competition. The ground rules were laid down early as new kid on the block Sarah Robinson (Shoalwater) was itching for a win in the division along with Lauren Williams (Mullaloo), Courtney Moyle (Mullaloo) and Kirby Smith (Lansdale).
All five competitors pushed each other and their surfing to new extremes with manouvres that were very similar to their male counterparts combining speed and power. But the experience of Phillips shone through and she did enough to win the final of the open womens convincingly.

An impressive display from the competitors in the junior and cadets division also kept judges busy.
In the junior division George Ramsdale (Mandurah), and Bryce Nettle (Scarborough) led the charge taking the challenge up to each where the two at one point were tied in the final, but Ramsdales last wave was enough to take the win ahead of Nettle by just two points with Eddy Goddard (Trigg) finishing third and James Few (Woodvale) fourth.
In the cadets division Mandurah was again well represented with Ryan Hands putting on a performance that even had the visiting pros stand up and take notice. Hands was unstoppable in the final after posting a seven point ride and a nine for his two scoring rides the youngster was far from finished putting on a performance that saw him take the lead and the final by 4 points with Lewis Maynard (Burns Beach) in second George Ramsdale (Mandurah)in third and Alex Halsey (Woodvale) in fourth.
Radical committed manouvres on the most critical part of the wave face for the longest fuctional distance is the Judging criteria and Hands delivered this to the judging panel picking the bigger of the set waves and utilising the full criteria of what the judges required for a win.
Hands was also awarded The Coca Cola Junior surfer of the event for his performance in both the final of the junior and cadet divisions and the preliminary heats of the event.

The junior womens was won by Lauren Williams (Mullaloo), while Ryan Hands (Mandurah) again had a win, but this time in the cadets with Shenton parks Shem Mahoney nailing the senior mens final.
The State Bodyboard Series is a 3 event series that determines the 2006 State Bodyboard Champions and the 2006 State Bodyboard Team.
Points are allocated for each event and selection is based on the best 2 results.
Round three of the series will be held at Cottesloe Beach on the 13th – 14th August.

Supported by Rip Curl/Hot Buttered
Trigg Beach
Western Australia
Trigg Beach 29th Aug to 2nd Sept
STATE FINALS

Testing conditions with strong crosshore winds and a 1 to 1.8 metre swell saw competitors on par for the final day of the WAVES / FCS School Surfing Titles for 2005.

Students from Mandurah Catholic College won three out of four of the body board finals that were contested winning the junior boys, junior girls and open boys division, while Ocean Reef senior high school took out the only remaining division that the country bumpkins didn’t win, being the open girls final.

The artic like conditions did not deter the competitors in the girls division with open girl final winners Jaala Baldock and Felicity Palmateer from St. Marks claiming the trophy and a berth at the nationals for their school. Regarded as seasoned competitors as both girls regularly compete on the contest calendar, the experience showed as they cut a sway through the other finalists on their way to claim victory.

Special awards were acknowledged for surfers who competed throughout the event and recipients included Junior Girls Surfing - Bunbury SHS Rip Curl Encouragement Award,
Mandurah Catholic College, Coca Cola Best of the Best Award,
Lauren Williams, Ocean Reef SHS ( Bodyboard) Hot Buttered Champion Girl and
Zak Ogram, Busselton SHS , FCS Outstanding Surfer award.

STAR SURF / FUNKSHEN
Body board Pro Am 2005
$8000 in cash & Prizes
Trigg Beach 28 August.

Testing conditions leave no room for errors as contestants vie for over $8000 in cash and prizes.
Small 0.2 to 0.5 metre waves did not deter competitors in Western Australias richest body board event the STAR SURF / FUNKSHEN Body board Pro Am for 2005 on the weekend at Trigg Beach.
Competitors were judged on their best two waves out of a total possible score of twenty and the focus on all the divisions was "Big Innovative Maneuvers".   Length of ride is not important as the judges focus on the degree of difficulty in the riders maneuvers which include, aerobatic, explosive-lip smashing airs and new innovative moves.
The more extreme and radical the manouvre appears to the judging panel the bigger the riders scored.

In the Womens division Mullaloos Lauren Williams dominated the final from start to finish.   The talented, petite Williams asserted her dominance early and continued her form to win convincingly ahead of the other girls in her final.
Williams was fast, fluid and explosive in her manouvres.   The 16 year old showed skills way beyond her age to take care of Lauren Trigg (Mullaloo), Courtney Moyle (Mullaloo) and Kirby Smith (Mullaloo) in that order.
